In addition, it\u00a0<strong>corrects the tension<\/strong>\u00a0on the chain by injecting grease into the\u00a0<strong>cylinder<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0This occurs through a control valve that allows the recoil spring to move forward thanks to the\u00a0<strong>hydraulic pressure<\/strong>. Lastly, the\u00a0<strong>tie-rod<\/strong>\u00a0keeps the spring constantly\u00a0<strong>pre-loaded<\/strong>, keeping it joined with the cylindrical body. But let&#8217;s see in detail the characteristics of each of these components.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ri\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rRMuL4MSw4A\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">The coil compression spring<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The\u00a0spring\u00a0is produced from\u00a0<strong>circular section wire<\/strong><strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0according to specific design objectives, including a good quality\/price ratio and the ability to be placed in the available space. The latter is a constraint that governs the\u00a0<strong>dimensional limits<\/strong>\u00a0of the spring&#8217;s operating length, in addition to its internal and external diameter. These measurements establish the spring\u00a0<strong>tension<\/strong>\u00a0along with other requirements that need to be known beforehand:\u00a0l<strong>oad<\/strong><strong>, deflection<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>maximum packed length<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When a compression coil spring is loaded, the wound wire is torsionally loaded. The tension is therefore greatest on the surface of the wire and on the inner edge of the coil. The\u00a0<strong>range of tensions<\/strong>\u00a0governs the life of the spring: the greater it is, the lower the maximum tension must be to have a\u00a0<strong>comparable life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The\u00a0<strong>choice of materials<\/strong>\u00a0suitable for the production of compression coil springs follows the dictates of the\u00a0<strong>standards on spring steels<\/strong>. In addition, the materials chosen must meet other requirements such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mass<\/li>\n<li>Cost<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue life expectancy<\/li>\n<li>Spatial limitations<\/li>\n<li>Usage<\/li>\n<li>Desired load on the spring<\/li>\n<li>Range of admissible tensions at which the spring operates<\/li>\n<li>Resistance to corrosion and load losses at high temperatures<\/li>\n<li>Amount of deformation that the spring undergoes during production<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-71974116-7fff-ae9e-d098-9e2c861aae9f\"><br \/>\nIn spring steels, the required properties are obtained through\u00a0<strong>high carbon contents<\/strong>\u00a0and constituents such as silicon, manganese, chromium, molybdenum and vanadium, and through\u00a0<strong>heat treatments<\/strong>\u00a0such as tempering.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>The importance of the production process<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The quality and efficiency of the springs depend on their production process, typically characterized by three phases: forming, heat treatment and post treatment.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">There are various spring\u00a0<strong>forming<\/strong>\u00a0methods:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>in\u00a0<strong>cold forming<\/strong>\u00a0the metal wire, already treated to reach its final strength level, it is passed through rollers and pins and travels around a fixed mandrel to form the typical spiral shape;<\/li>\n<li>in\u00a0<strong>hot forming<\/strong>, the bars are heated up to about 930\u00b0C and then wound. Usually, the hot spring is cooled in oil and hardened.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">There is a\u00a0<strong>heat treatment<\/strong>\u00a0for each type of spring that serves to give it strength.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The\u00a0<strong>small and medium-sized springs<\/strong>, which will not undergo high stress during use, need a\u00a0<strong>stabilization treatment<\/strong>\u00a0in small ovens that operate at\u00a0temperatures\u00a0<strong>between 300 and 400\u00b0C<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The\u00a0<strong>large springs<\/strong>, which during use will be subject to high stress, need\u00a0<strong>both a\u00a0<\/strong><strong>hardening and tempering treatment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The\u00a0<strong>hardening<\/strong>\u00a0consists in the\u00a0<strong>rapid heating<\/strong>\u00a0of the springs in an oven at 860\u00b0C\u00a0with\u00a0<strong>consequent sudden cooling<\/strong>\u00a0in an oil bath. It is used to obtain a good\u00a0<strong>compromise between toughness and hardness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A\u00a0<strong>tempering<\/strong>\u00a0treatment follows in order to achieve a good compromise between the hardness, strength and toughness of the steel.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-b078f45e-7fff-0a44-de22-6b3f8c3bf06b\">After the heat treatment, the spring is subjected to the\u00a0<strong>presetting process<\/strong>\u00a0which consists in winding the spring up to a free length greater than the specified free length.The spring at room temperature is compressed to its solid length or to a specific preset length to generate yield.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Possible problems with coil springs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Like any other component, coil springs can also face some\u00a0problems. The main ones concern\u00a0breaking, which can happen for various causes including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Surface defects<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Corrosion<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Improper heat treatments<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; if the springs are overheated, the grain structure\u00a0will be coarse and the fatigue life short. If it cannot heat to the proper\u00a0temperature, or for long enough to bring all the carbides into solution,\u00a0the result will be patches of ferrite and a low fatigue limit<\/li>\n<li><strong>Decarburization<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; partial decarburization is usually present in springs, at least\u00a0\u00a0to a small extent. The degree of admissible decarburization depends on the type of\u00a0material and application.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">The tie-rod<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This is a\u00a0<strong>high-strength component<\/strong>\u00a0because when the spring is deflected a load greater than the preload acts on it.\u00a0The\u00a0<strong>load\u00a0<\/strong>applied to the tie-rod is of two types:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Load caused by the\u00a0<strong>impact of the nut against the yoke<\/strong>\u00a0when the compressed spring returns from the stroke end position (for example, the same load value at the stroke end);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Load present if there is offset between the axis of the spring and the axis of the front idler wheel, or the\u00a0<strong>bending load<\/strong>\u00a0caused by the bending moment together with the\u00a0<strong>end-of-stroke load<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Being subjected to such\u00a0<strong>stresses<\/strong>, the tie-rod must be produced from a\u00a0<strong>steel alloy<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>tempering steel<\/strong>\u00a0is most widely used by virtue of its good strength, forgeability and machinability. Furthermore, it must be suitable for all\u00a0<strong>hot uses up to 500\u00b0C<\/strong>\u00a0to resist creep plasticity. It can also be surface hardened or nitrided to make it\u00a0<strong>more resistant to wear and fatigue<\/strong>\u00a0for parts not subject to too high specific pressures.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">The cylinder<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">By injecting\u00a0<strong>grease into the cylinder<\/strong>\u00a0through the check\u00a0<strong>valve<\/strong>, the recoil spring moves forward and tensions the chain. Vice versa, letting the grease out through the\u00a0valve\u00a0loosens the chain causing the recoil spring to retract.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When assembling the cylinder, a pump sends grease to the cylinder via the valve. This grease\u00a0<strong>moves the piston<\/strong>\u00a0which pushes the entire track tensioner. The\u00a0<strong>control<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>valve<\/strong>, on the other hand, must be designed and applied taking into account the maximum operating pressure. The surface must be\u00a0<strong>chrome-plated<\/strong>\u00a0for greater resistance to wear and corrosion.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The material chosen for the production of the cylinder is usually a classic tempered steel containing a percentage of carbon such as to obtain maximum toughness.<\/p>\n<p>The cylinder must necessarily be connected to the tie-rod inside the\u00a0<strong>recoil spring<\/strong>. This\u00a0<strong>tie rod-cylinder<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>connection<\/strong>\u00a0can be made through different configurations such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Welding<\/li>\n<li>Threading<\/li>\n<li>Single piece<\/li>\n<li>Backing up<\/li>\n<li>Threading+welding<\/li>\n<li>Backing up+welding<\/li>\n<li>Backing up+threading<\/li>\n<li>Backing up+threading+welding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3
