Loading and abrasive materials: how to manage these factors to extend the life of the undercarriage<\/h2>\n

As noted in the previous article, over the life of a tracked vehicle\u00a0undercarriage maintenance costs\u00a0can represent\u00a0as much as 50% of total expenses. Wear on these components is inevitable due to dynamic loading and external agents. However, good machine management can offer considerable reductions in maintenance costs while improving productivity.<\/em><\/h4>\n

In the last issue we introduced the theme of\u00a0reducing wear on the undercarriage<\/strong>\u00a0and specifically discussed\u00a0bad habits when using the machine<\/a><\/strong>, like excessive speed. There are\u00a02 more factors<\/strong>\u00a0influencing wear<\/strong>\u00a0that we can control in order to extend duration and improve efficiency:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. load<\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. presence of external\u00a0abrasive materials<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Main wear factors associated with loading<\/h3>\n

    Excessive chain tension<\/strong>
    \nThis is the controllable factor that most influences wear on the undercarriage. Keeping the track chains excessively tensioned for the conditions of work\u00a0increases\u00a0wear on the external diameter of the bushings<\/strong>. This\u00a0wear<\/strong>\u00a0is estimated to be\u00a0between 50% and 75% faster compared to use with correct chain adjustment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Excessive shoe width
    \n<\/strong>Using\u00a0wider shoes than necessary<\/strong>\u00a0for the machine flotation\u00a0can seriously reduce the life of the undercarriage<\/strong>. The stress on the chain elements is proportional to shoe width. For example, a 36\u2019\u2019 shoe generates up to 50% more stress compared to a 24\u2019\u2019 shoe and\u00a0excessive stress can cause breakage<\/strong>. Unnecessarily wide shoes also:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • compromise chain stability;<\/li>\n
    • affect the tightening torque of the shoe bolts;<\/li>\n
    • accelerate loss of oil in case of\u00a0 lubricated chains;<\/li>\n
    • reduce the manoeuvrability and versatility of the vehicle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      However, LGP machines can be equipped\u00a0operate\u00a0with wide shoes. This fact because the weight of the vehicle, if only operating in soft terrains, is distributed more evenly across a wider shoe.<\/p>\n

      Excessive machine weight
      \n<\/strong>
      \nExcessive machine weight<\/strong>, for example due to\u00a0unnecessary<\/strong>\u00a0equipment<\/strong>\u00a0being fitted,\u00a0increases the load on the undercarriage<\/strong>, encouraging premature wear. This can be avoided by not overloading the machine and not fitting any elements that are not strictly necessary for the activity.<\/p>\n

      Misalignment of components<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \"ITR<\/p>\n

      Misalignment of undercarriage components that are in contact with each other as effect of improper maintenance or excessive load produces\u00a0uneven and accelerated wear<\/strong>. Differences in wear between the right and left sides, front and back, inside or outside of tracks, if not a consequence of the type of work or the way the machine is being used, is often the result of\u00a0incorrect alignment between frame, idler wheel, and drive sprocket<\/strong>. The bigger and heavier the machine, the greater the risk of misalignment of components.
      \nOne of the factors that further accentuates misalignment is excessive track chain tension, already mentioned above, because it increases loading between interacting parts.
      \nIt is therefore\u00a0important to\u00a0<\/strong>eliminate any misalignments before\u00a0<\/strong>installing a new undercarriage<\/strong>. How can this problem be recognized? As a rule of thumb, the presence of misalignments can be checked visually by closely observing any abnormal wear pattern on the bottom rollers.<\/p>\n

      \n<\/strong>
      \nThis bad habit generates\u00a0excessive dynamic loading on the drive sprocket\u00a0<\/strong>(also giving the machine a tendency to judder), which in turn bears on the\u00a0bushings\u00a0causing\u00a0accelerated\u00a0structural damage<\/strong>\u00a0to them and the other undercarriage components involved.<\/p>\n

      Presence of external abrasive materials<\/h3>\n

      Cleaning the machine
      \n<\/strong>
      \nAt the end of each work day the operators should take time to\u00a0clean any dirt and debris that has accumulated on a tracked undercarriage<\/strong>.\u00a0If the\u00a0tracks<\/strong>\u00a0are\u00a0clogged with dirt<\/strong>\u00a0the machine will have greater difficulty operating,\u00a0wasting energy and generating additional loads<\/strong>\u00a0that shorten the useful life of the undercarriage. This phenomenon is especially critical in geographic areas with cold climates, where mud, dirt, and debris tend to freeze up.
      \nAnother\u00a0negative effect of dirt<\/strong>\u00a0on the machine is\u00a0accelerated wear on the drive sprocket<\/strong>\u00a0teeth<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0the outside of the chain bushings<\/strong>\u00a0caused by incorrect contact between these elements.\u00a0The rollers, both bottom and carrier<\/strong>, are also affected by this problem\u00a0to the point of complete seizure<\/strong>. This is indicated by the appearance of flat areas on the tread surface.
      \nFinally, over time\u00a0the presence of mud<\/strong>\u00a0creates additional layers of material on the undercarriage components, generating\u00a0excessive tension in the chains<\/strong>\u00a0and so further increasing the rate of wear.\u00a0Shovels and pressure water cleaning systems can be used<\/strong>. However, care must be taken with the latter!\u00a0Never direct water jets towards the lubricated chain plugs!<\/strong>\u00a0This could cause them to move and come out of their seatings, resulting in loss of joints lubrication.<\/p>\n

      Along with management of controllable factors like speed, bad machine user habits, loading, and external abrasive materials, there are other forms of good practice that can help avoid premature wear on the undercarriage, and we will talk about these soon in another post.<\/p>\n
